Fundraising

Apart from the challenge and hopefully the achievement of climbing Africa’s tallest mountain, we want you to set yourself the target of raising money for our work with our Partner inTanzania, the Anglican Diocese of Mara.

Go Mad inTanzaniais an independent charity that has been in partnership with the Diocese of Mara for a number of years.  We helped build a cathedral for the new Diocese of Mara and since then have been helping local farmers, people with HIV, orphans and pastors with small building projects such as water tanks, pit latrines, small homes and Churches. We consider ourselves privileged to have been involved in this partnership work with our brothers and sisters from Mara.

The Climb

Hiking to 19,340 feet (5896 metres) will be a test of physical and mental stamina.  The six day trek covers 75 km. We will be taking the Machame Route up Kilimanjaro and will be staying in tents each night.  This route offers the best chance to acclimatize and offers the best views.  Porters will carry all the equipment and set up camp for us each day. We have the option of acclimatizing for an extra day if required.

We will be using the Marangu hotel to organize our porters, guides and equipment for our expedition up Kilimanjaro. They have provided a very professional service for many climbers over the years and we were very impressed with their approach when we visited them last year. They were highly recommended by all the climbers we contacted who used them.

How fit do you have to be?

A good general level of fitness is clearly essential, but it’s also the type of fitness that is important!  We will be hiking for 6 or 7 days with at least 11 hours on the summit day.  Therefore, as part of your preparation for this trip we strongly recommend that you get out in the great outdoors as often as you can.  Regular aerobic activity, such as cycling or running, is a great way to get fit but it is not a substitute for getting out for a walk!  Hiking is probably the best means of preparing yourself for this adventure and it is essential to get some good hill days in whilst carrying a few liters of water or a loaded day pack.

We will expect you to have experience of walking for 4-5 hours on consecutive days before the orientation in September.  We suggest that you keep a log book of any hikes you do so we can discuss your training program.

The orientation

The orientation will take place in Snowdon in May.  There will be an expedition during the weekend so we can all get to walk as a group before the big climb.  We will go out ‘whatever the weather’ and we will provide a suggested kit list at a later date.  The orientation is an integral part of the trip and all participants are expected to attend.  The weekend is jointly hosted by the Transform Team and the trip leaders.  There will be informative sessions on health matters, safety in travel, cultural awareness, Tearfund partners as well as Team building exercises.
