Mara is part of the inland or highland region, of Tanzania, which is predominantly Christian.
The Mara region, was the last area of East Africa to be explored by Europeans. This was because it was tucked away off the main trading routes, and also because the reputation of the Masai Warriors put off early European Explorers . The first European to see Lake Victoria was Speake in 1865. He claimed it was the source of the Nile and Livingstone later proved that this was the case.
It is still rarely visited by Europeans other than Missionaries or Aid workers.
The Mara region is about the size of Wales . It is bounded in the west by Lake Victoria , in the north by the Kenyan hills and in the east and south by the Serengeti plains.
Gold mining has recently restarted in the area and this has helped many people. The main other activities are fishing on the Lake, farming and tourism.
The Christian faith is growing strongly in Tanzania generally, and in Mara region in particular. There is a big emphases on evangelism. All the pastors and Evangelists in Mara Anglican Diocese are local Africans. Westerners help with training Pastors and in Economic Development.
We in Go MAD see our role in Musoma as supporting the excellent work of the Anglican Diocese. The Bishop has asked us to work in partnership with local parishes building a houses, water tanks and Ventilated Improved Privies for the Pastors , who often live in very poor conditions.
