January 2013

Tearfund Winter trip 2013:  15th January - 1st April

 12 week - £ £2700

Teams will be staying at Eagle lodge which has been purpose built for Go MAD volunteers on the Dioceses compound. The lodge over looks Lake Victoria and is located in a secure and peaceful setting just a few minutes drive from Musoma town, all the projects take place relatively close by to Musoma.

There are a range of projects teams can get involved in during a long term trip:

Building:

There a number of different building projects you will be involved in whilst inTanzaniaand these vary from trip to trip depending on what is required at the village you will be working in, previous projects have included:

  • Building or repairing  water tanks
  • Building pit latrines
  • Roofing an existing Church
  • Building a Church or a house

You will learn all of the skills needed to complete these projects whilst inTanzaniaso no experience is required.  You will use local suppliers and have the opportunity to work along side the local people in your village.  All of these building projects will make a vital difference to the health and well being of the members of the local community.

Health Education:

Go MAD is linked with a number of different health programmes run by the Anglican Diocese.  You will have the opportunity to help with these projects assisting with home visits to patients of the disability centre (patients with albinism, HIV/AIDS or physical disabilities), visiting the weekly club foot and cleft palate clinic and assisting in the HIV/AIDS home care programme.  You will also lead your own health outreach in the specific village where you are working.   Something that is very important is teaching basic health education and sanitation to the village members.  You will be involved in health surveys to get an idea of the current situation in the village and will then hold a number of classes on health education based around the output.  The topics you will cover are:

  • Basic hygiene
  • Diarrhoea
  • Malaria
  • HIV/AIDS

Musoma Children’s Home:

Whilst inTanzaniayou will have the chance to help at the Musoma Children’s Home.  The home is for children from new born to 3 years.  Many of the children are orphans and live in the home until they are found a suitable family to stay.  However, many still have a family but they are unable to support the child at the time so they stay at the home until they their family is ready.  Your time at the orphanage is spent playing with the children and simply showing them love and affection as many of them come from very difficult backgrounds.   Helping at meal times and putting the children to bed is also a very rewarding activity you will get to undertake.

Rehema:

Rehema is a project set up to help women and children living in extremely difficult circumstances.  One of the main outreaches Rehema has is greeting card making and this is mainly what you would help with.  During your time helping at Rehema you would make many of the card foundations for the women to then bead and then finish the mounting as the equipment required for this is to large and heavy to transport to the ladies homes.  You will also have to opportunity to work alongside the women who Rehema supports which adds a further level of experiencing the difference this makes to their day to day life. For more information on Rehema, click here.

Mara Primary School:

Mara primary is a local school near to where you will be staying.  Your work there will involve leading sports lessons once a week with 7-16 year old children and also helping in the reception to Yr 2 classes.  This will involve assisting with leading the lessons teaching a range of subjects such as Maths and English.

Sunday School:

During your stay you will become very involved with the church in your partner village as you will be working with them and also attending church there each sunday.  Go MAD encourages you to set up a Sunday church there teaching the younger church members basic messages from the bible.  This is very beneficial to the children as most of the churches don’t have specific children centred activities.

Free Time:

Each trip will include a holiday to the Serengeti for 2 days.  You will also go on a mountain trip half way through your trip for 2 days as a time to reflect and for some well earned rest.  This affords the opportunity to explore remote areas of the Mara region visiting some amazing rock formations.
