About Go MAD In Tanzania
Our History
Make A Difference in Tanzania was born out of St John the Evangelists work in the Anglican Diocese of Mara which started in 1994. We helped build a cathedral for the new Diocese of Mara and since then have been helping local farmers, people with HIV, orphans and pastors. We consider ourselves privileged to have been involved in this partnership work with our brothers from Mara.
Our Vision
To give people the opportunity to come to Tanzania and be changed by their experience into more complete individuals and make a positive difference in the area in which they serve.
Being changed by the experince through:
- Interfacing with a developing country’s culture, possibly for the first time.
- Observing and getting involved in small scale development projects.
- Seeing the Christian faith in action, through the practical projects that you participate in, and observing the Christian faith in action around you.
- Examining your own life and faith while away from home and having the opportunity to develop your walk with God.
- Learning new skills in the following areas…
- The basics of Swahili
- Practical skills, such as how to build a house , water tanks, and/or toilets, etc
- Living in a developing country and community.
- How to work together as part of a team.
- How to communicate with people from a different culture.
- Forming friendships with group members, team leaders and people from around the Mara Region.
- Having a first hand experience of the fragile eco system that exists in developing countries.
Making a positive difference through:
- Supporting practical projects in the villages such as building low cost houses, ferro-cement water tanks that provide clean water and toilets for improved sanitation. These improvements will significantly improve the health of the community. Part of your programme costs would be used to pay for these.
- Encouraging a positive approach to community development in the villages, by providing an opportunity for communities to prioritise needs and to know that they can work in partnership with visitors to achieve these goals.
- Sharing skills that you may have, such as computer skills, medical skills , music , caring , football , etc…
- Gifting your time and energy in the form of physical labour, to support development projects in the villages.
- Supporting the Diocese of Mara in their general work in the area. A percentage of the costs of the Gap Year programme directly support the Diocese of Mara in their valuable work.
- By spending money in the region, many local people who would normally earn next to nothing, will really benefit from the purchases you make, and from the services you use.
- By making friends with people from Mara that may well be friends for the rest of your lives.
